Reading happens on your device.

Earlo does not require an Earlo account. Imported documents, recognized text, generated narration, notes, bookmarks, reading progress, listening activity and preferences are stored locally. Speech generation, language detection and text recognition run on your device. Your documents are not uploaded to a Boston Research Journals speech or AI server.

The app does not contain advertising, cross-app tracking or a third-party analytics SDK. We do not receive your local library or listening history through ordinary offline use, and we do not sell your personal information or use it for targeted advertising.

Earlo’s share extension and widgets use shared storage on your device. The paired Apple Watch companion receives library and playback information, bookmarks and related metadata from your iPhone to provide its companion features.

Optional iCloud sync.

If you enable iCloud sync, Earlo sends library documents and associated information, including notes, bookmarks, reading progress, listening activity and preferences, to a private CloudKit database associated with your Apple Account. Apple provides this service; Boston Research Journals does not operate a separate copy of your library on its own servers.

Sync is optional and can be disabled in Earlo’s settings. Disabling sync stops future synchronization; it does not automatically erase information already stored in iCloud. Device backups and other Apple services may also retain app data according to your Apple settings. See Apple’s privacy information.

Services you choose to use.

Webpages and research papers. When you request a webpage, DOI, arXiv paper or online attachment, Earlo connects to the relevant website or service. The provider receives the requested URL or identifier and ordinary connection information, such as your IP address. Its own privacy policy applies.

Zotero. If you connect a Zotero library, Earlo stores your API key in the device Keychain and sends it to Zotero to access the library you selected. Earlo uses this connection to read and import library information and attachments. You can disconnect in Earlo and revoke the key through Zotero. See Zotero’s privacy policy.

Ask AI and sharing. Earlo prepares the passage and context you select for a handoff, copy or export. It does not automatically send your whole library to an AI service. When you choose to share or open an external service, the content you send is handled under that service’s terms and privacy policy. Review the content before sharing it.

Permissions stay tied to a task.

Camera access is used when you choose to scan a page. The system file and photo pickers give Earlo access to the items you select for import. You can manage permissions in your device’s Settings. Revoking a permission does not remove copies you already imported into your library.

When you contact support.

If you email [email protected], we receive your email address, message and any attachments or other details you choose to send. We use that information to respond, investigate the issue and maintain necessary support records. Our email provider processes the correspondence to deliver and store it.

Please send only what is needed to explain the issue. Do not include passwords, API keys, confidential documents or material you are not permitted to share. Support correspondence is retained only as needed to handle the request and meet applicable recordkeeping or legal obligations. Contact us to ask about or request deletion of information you have sent.

Cloudflare hosts and delivers this website. It may process connection and request information, including IP addresses, requested pages and browser information, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

We have not connected an advertising or visitor analytics service to this website. The website does not ask you to upload your library or create an account. Links to the App Store, Boston Research Journals and other external sites take you to services with their own privacy policies.

Managing and removing information.

You can delete library items and notes from Earlo. When sync is enabled, allow connected devices to finish syncing deletions. Turning sync off or uninstalling the app does not itself remove cloud copies, exported files, backups or content previously sent to another service. Manage those copies through the relevant device, account or service.

Disconnect Zotero to remove its saved connection from Earlo, and revoke its API key in Zotero if you no longer need it. You can manage iCloud storage and backups through your Apple Account settings. We cannot access or restore a library that exists only on your device.

Depending on your location and the law that applies, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, obtain a copy of, or restrict or object to the processing of personal information we hold. Contact us to make a request. We may need limited information to verify the request, and some records may need to be retained where the law requires it. You may also contact your local data protection authority.

Security and service providers.

Earlo uses the platform’s app storage, Keychain and private CloudKit facilities for their intended purposes. Your device security, backups and the services you choose also affect how your information is protected. No storage or transmission method can be guaranteed completely secure.

Information sent to support or processed to deliver this website may be handled by service providers in other countries. We may disclose information we hold where required by law or necessary to protect users, our services or legal rights. This does not give us access to documents stored only in your local library.

Children’s information.

Earlo does not ask users to provide an age or create a profile. We do not knowingly request personal information from children through support or this website. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us so we can review and remove it where appropriate.
